Bring on the Sun!
It has been an exhausting spring so far, wood sheds have to be filled, and gardens tilled. This year we are converting the front gardens into raised beds, this will minimize the amount of weeding and enable us to keep the two new dogs from digging up all of our goodies.
A friend has been dropping off massive loads of Hemlock slabs that are off cuts from his saw mill. these make very attractive sides fro the beds, and I've made the paths between the same width as our electric lawn mover, what ought to make it easier to tame the savage weed problem come mid summer
I also made a mini greenhouse out of PEX Pipe and 1 x 3 strapping, This will give us an ample supply of greens early in the year. In the summer I'll fine tune the invention, but so far it's held up to some shockingly strong winds.
We are also fine tuning the complete launch of our market Garden and Farm Gate Sales. Martina is at the Brockville Farmers Market at the Vista Farm booth helping out on Saturdays, and at the Lansdowne Farmers Market starting in June.
This year we have a variety of new products including local honey, natural soaps and four varieties of garlic. The herb and veggie gardens have expanded accordingly, and we have five pigs working on the land were our blueberries will go next year!
Last year was such a thrilling season, the chicken experiment was interesting, we liked having all the good eggs, but we discovered that we're not all that keen on slaughtering the birds. The lambs were OK because they just got shipped off! YUM! And I suppose the pigs will go the same way!
This web site will be upgraded over the next few months, we will be offering more information and services , and be able to have more direct contact with our friends and customers.
At Splitzville Farm, our aim is towards self sufficiency. To grow our own food and drink. We strive for an eco friendly existance, with solar power and water catchment. We long for a day when we drive our electric car to the local farmers market to sell our goods.
The idea that one would compose a meal in which the ingredients had traveled farther than us, is baffeling! We've traveled a lot, but some meals are full of items that are now common that have travelled thousands of miles to get to your table.
And they have the nerve to call them fresh!
Most importantly, our motto at Splitzville Farm is simply...
"Do what you want, relax, say what you feel" and it seems to be working, both of us are healthier and happier since the inception of the farm.
